Re-alignment knee osteotomy is an incredibly powerful operation, which forms a major part of my practice. I can usually judge alignment from the way that you walk and the shape of your leg, but this is best assessed from an x-ray of your whole leg. There is a weight bearing plumb line from your hip to your ankle. The position of this line as it passes through your knee gives a good indication of force distribution across the joint. When forces are being focussed in the damaged part of your knee it is worth considering re-alignment osteotomy to alter force distribution for beneficial effect.
The shape of your bones on x-ray will allow me to formulate a specific surgical plan that is unique to you. This is usually involves cutting the bone above or below your knee and then re-shaping the leg ideally to give you a flat knee joint with a favourable weight bearing axis.

Why osteotomy?
Osteotomy is a viable alternative to knee replacement for patients who have some bony deformity associated with their knee arthritis. The intention is to perform an accurate knee osteotomy, which potentially avoids the need for knee replacement. In very young patients, performing an osteotomy means that any subsequent knee replacement is at least performed at an appropriate age with the intention of removing a revision cycle from that patients life time.
